The Gyrotonic Expansion System® was created by Hungarian Juliu Horvath, who was the principle dancer for the the Romanian National Ballet Company by the time he was 21.
After defecting from Romania in 1970, he moved to New York City under political asylum where he struggled to survive. He kept auditioning and performing in civic ballets until his perseverance paid off, securing him a position as principal dancer with the Houston Ballet.
The ultimate aim is to be at home in one’s body, to be at one with the nature of oneself, and to experience exercise as a creative and delightful experience.
During this time, Juliu ruptured his Achilles tendon and had to stop dancing. In his quest to heal himself, he moved to a humble dwelling on the island of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands in 1977.
Through the intense study of yoga, Juliu gained an unique insight into the inner workings of the body and its healing. He developed a system that would lead to the creation of Gyrokenisis®.
Upon his return to New York in the 1980's, he started teaching and sharing his method with others and it soon gained a large following.
A unique line of equipment was developed and to this day Juliu still continues to adapt, evolve and share the Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis methods
